Not much new stuff to show at the moment, so here's the engine. Stocktastic! |
I am, at heart, 100 per cent a German car fan, whether it be a classic air-cooled Beetle, a Golf, or a 911, but the lure of a sporty French hot hatch is just too much. I’ve owned a number of Peugeot 205 GTis and have always longed for a 106 Rallye, after going out for a spin in a good friend’s one about 10 years ago.
So, I sold my MkII Golf and began scouring the Internet and classifieds for a nice original 106 Rallye in as best condition as my humble penny could buy. As luck would have it, I stumbled across the car you see here. OK, it’s not totally the colour of my choice, but was far too good a car to turn down, and yeah, the red is growing on me more by the day! (It’s a good colour! – Ed.)
The new PT project car is a 1994 Series 1, in Cherry Red, 38,000 miles from new with a full service history; the previous owner had this little car in their ownership since 1995. All is original, including paintwork, stickers, interior and even the dealer supplied number plates. The wheels could do with a re-paint or replacing, but that is the least of my worries.
After a week of driving around I began to realise exactly why I wanted one of these fantastic cars. The engine is out of this world, with 100bhp at 7200rpm and a power-to-weight ratio of 121bhp-per-tonne (the car’s about 825kg). This little baby revs like you wouldn’t believe! The handling is go-kart-like with MacPherson struts, coil springs and 22mm anti-roll bars front and 19mm torsion bar and 22mm anti-roll bar at the rear, this package certainly ticks all the boxes!
I do have a number of very subtle plans for this car and while it is a very good example I feel it's not too good to tweak a little; I intend to improve the driveability and performance of this superb French hot hatch. Watch this space as the fun progresses! For more info on the 106 Rallye you can check out the 106 Rallye Forum at www.106rallyeforum.com. SM
