Burnt out plugs and a dodgy distributor cap. That'll do it...

This month my car gave up on me, twice. Luckily nothing too serious. First time was the power steering belt; I was relieved after thinking it might have been the motor. A quick call to our local shop Motos ( a great shop with very helpful and friendly advice) the belt was reserved for me.

Getting the belt on is a reasonably easy job. Luckily again, we had a pit to work with so getting to the underside of the car was easy, apart from removing loads of random, heavy bits of my dad’s old Rolls-Royce spares (he's built from the bottom up a 1932 20/25). So with the belt on the car and tightened up, the car was back on the road, and for only a few pounds. I was happy again – but not for long.

The new-fangled K&N air filter.

Next the car started running really badly – losing power while driving along then eventually giving up, stalling and not starting again. After going through the normal routine of checking all the usual suspects, spark plugs, leads, rotor arm etc., I removed the coil lead from the distributer cap and found the problem! The plug was completely burnt out, leaving just a gravel-like consistency mess in its place. Back on the phone to Motos for a new cap and coil lead and the car was once again sorted...

Now the car is running well again. I gave K&N a call and ordered an induction kit (the engine mods have started, about time!). And what a nice job to do, removing the big VW unit and getting the K&N into place was simple. The K&N intakes are a great way to maximize airflow and engine performance. I'm sure it's faster and it sounds great. Get one!

Also ordered this month was a sports cat from Online Automotive; I just need to source an exhaust and hey, we're starting to get somewhere! Hopefully more on this next month. JM
